A Baby Story - Welcome Heinrich Aaron Ward

Everything was planned out and ready to go. We had no idea there would be a new plan in our future. The c-section date was schedule for January 29th. The day before we went to the hospital to get blood drawn and go over last minute questions that the hospital had. On the way home Adam suggested we go out to dinner one last time together. We enjoyed a really great italian restaurant close to our house. I stuffed my face knowing I only had hours before I couldn't eat anything and totally not looking forward to it. We didn't have to be at the hospital till 1pm. We were planning on sleeping in so we were fully rested for the next day.

Then at 3:30 in the morning I was awoken by the most painful menstrual type cramp i'd ever felt. I laid back down thinking that was weird. Then another one came. I grabbed my phone and started timing them. They were 10 minutes apart and lasted 20 seconds. I went into the living room thinking a position change might make a difference. It did, at 4am they went to 7 minutes apart for 30 seconds. I quickly called the hospital and told them what was happening. They said I needed to get there immediately so they could stop them. I look in the doorway and Adam is standing there staring at me and asked, " did you just say contractions". "Yeah, i'm in labor, call a cab, we have to go to the hospital now". And then we were off. We were admitted and I was eventually given drugs to stop the contractions, and I must say thank the Lord because WOW those hurt.

My Doctor called us at the hospital and said she wanted to move up the c-section and he was coming out at 10am. I was thrilled. The sooner the better. What happened next was surreal. First, getting prepped for a c-section was unbelievably weird. They had one guy in the room and he basically did all the heavy lifting...and by that I  mean me. He rolled me on my side and curved me into a ball for my spinal. I was actually kind of impressed. Then I was strapped down and the sheet was put up. I'm pretty sure my face said it all because everyone kept asking are you ok Frau Ward? Are you cold? Yes i'm as fine as I can be and no i'm not cold i'm so terrified that I physically can't stop shaking. I will say that every single doctor, anesthesiologist, and nurse were beyond accommodating and caring. They put a heating tube on my chest with the blankets covering me and then brought Adam in.

We talked for a few minutes still waiting on Dr. Kunz to get there. She had c-sections all over town apparently that day and I just moved in between the morning 2. She walks in the door and is ready to rock. She asks if I'm ready and I say YES! Then 2 minutes go by and I see the entire table, that my body is laying on, shaking. I feel pressure and then I hear it. That blood curdling scream. Up over the sheet Dr. Kunz holds up my son. He looks so adorable and yet, so gross. Fresh out of the womb is not the most desirable complection for anyone. He and Adam are whisked away to the other room with the pediatrician. They clean him up just a touch and make sure he is ok. From the other room I hear yet another scream, one that is so loud that all the doctors and nurses turn and look for a second. I knew that was my boy with a high-c scream like me. Then they bring him to me and lay him on my chest. We have a staring contest, I look at him, he looks at me. We can't stop.  He stopped screaming and crying and were just looking at one another. He's just so adorable with my Solomon nose and Adam's cute lips. I get to keep him for a few minutes, then he and Adam leave to do a more thorough check up and they finish  putting me back together. By the time I get back to my room Adam and Henri are sitting in there waiting for me. And this is the start of our new life with:
