Hiking Fun in Switzerland

Adam has had an itch to go hiking again recently and he finally found a great location about an hour from Zurich. We took the train an hour south to Murg and then took a boat across the lake to hike. While we were waiting for the next ferry we walked around the lake a bit and saw people wind surfing. The water was like ice but it was so windy it was perfect weather for it.

View of the Hillside...this is what we think of when we think green pastures

The wind surfers while we were on the ferry.

We talked to the captain and said it's a 3hr hike down the lake to Walenstadt and it's a very beautiful walk. Adam's german tutor at the office was the first to recommend this hike so between the two we were really excited. Adam was warned by the tutor that there is an uphill portion but he didn't think it was too bad. The captain said it's not a lot only 500 meters. Both people a little nonchalant about the whole thing so we figured this would be cake. They lied!!! Adam and I were huffing and puffing our way up this darn mountain. There is no way to figure out how far you had gone and how much was left so you just keep trucking up praying that eventually there would be an end. Even though this mountain gave both Adam and I's legs the beating of a life time each time we stopped, every 10 min, there was one breathtaking view after another. The weather was perfect and sunny and the water was as teal as the caribbean. This area of Switzerland is known for it's mediterranean climate. It is very rocky with even some palm trees surrounding Lake Walensee. This is definitely a great place for hiking and we would highly recommend anyone coming here to go.

View of the beginning of the trail, what we thought was an easy walk.

View of the city across from us

We did arrive to the top which was probably the highlight of my trip, just kidding. All around the top of the hiking area are huge rock walls protruding up. Not easily accessible to a novice hiker. Therefore we just stared in awe and kept walking down the mountain.

One of the mountain tops was rounded out like a castle

The top...FINALLY!! Worth the hike up!

A close up view from the top. There are snow covered mountains right behind it.

As we were walking back down we came across quite a few hunters and their hunting dogs. We still haven't figured out what they were hunting but Adam was really excited to see that people do hunt here. We made it down to Walenstadt and had to walk through town to find the train station. As we were walking along this sleepy town we noticed two things. One hardly anyone was out and about and no restaurants were open. And two in small little towns in switzerland people can have their pet sheep living in the center of the city.

Sheep in the middle of town. They were weird a couple of them were eating bent down on their front legs instead of standing.

There are 3 grocery stores, the usual to Switzerland, Coop, Migro, and Denner. All on one block and luckily all open. Adam and I of course are starving because we ate breakfast and then left to go hiking there fore it is now 5 O'clock and we haven't eaten since 9:30am. We grab a few snacks and head towards the train station to enjoy sitting down again and wait for our train.

This was probably the second best hike we have done. First was Interlaken with Adam's parents in August. This one is closer to us and also just as gorgeous, but a lot harder hahahaha!
